What areas are covered by Fair Housing Laws?

Virtually all residential real estate transactions relating to housing including appraisals, insurance, mortgage lending, realtor services, advertising, sexual harassment, planning and zoning, accessibility issues, and public housing.  Housing discrimination can be as subtle as imposing different terms and conditions for families with children, or as blatant as telling someone that, “ We don’t rent to people with disabilities, Hispanics, or families with children.”

Housing discrimination indicators:

 “If you would have been here 15 minutes ago,  someone just left a deposit on our last unit.”

“Families with children are only allowed in the ground floor units.”

“We can’t accommodate your particular handicap.”

“Children under the age of 16 cannot use the pool without adult supervision.”

The Fair Housing Continuum, Inc. is a private non-profit fair housing agency dedicated entirely to the elimination of housing discrimination in Florida, serving Brevard, Indian River, Seminole, Osceola, Orange and Volusia Counties.

What can I do if I think I am a victim of Housing Discrimination?

If you want to report suspected housing discrimination, contact the Fair Housing Continuum, Inc.  An intake specialist will discuss your situation, determine if a violation exists, assist in completing the necessary complaint forms, and if necessary, refer you to an attorney.

What if the person I complained about retaliates against MY FAMILY AND ME?

It is illegal to retaliate against, harass, or otherwise interfere with your right to pursue a fair housing complaint.
